While it can feel alarming to wake up to no heating or hot water, in many cases the fix is as simple as topping up your system pressure. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what the F1 fault means, what’s likely causing it, what you can safely do yourself, and when it’s time to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does this error mean?
The F1 error code on Ferroli boilers — including popular models like the Modena, Optimax, and BlueHelix range — signals that the boiler’s internal pressure sensor has detected that the system water pressure has dropped below the safe operating threshold. Most Ferroli boilers require a working pressure of between 1 and 1.5 bar (shown on the pressure gauge on the front of the unit). When pressure falls below roughly 0.5 bar, the boiler locks out and displays F1 as a safety measure to prevent the heat exchanger running dry, which could cause serious and expensive damage. In short: your boiler knows there isn’t enough water in the system to operate safely, so it has shut itself down. This is a protective feature, not a failure of the boiler itself — though it can sometimes point to an underlying problem that needs attention.

Step 1 — Check the pressure gauge: Before doing anything else, locate the pressure gauge on your Ferroli boiler (usually a dial or digital display on the front panel). If the needle is below 1 bar or the display shows a very low reading, low pressure is almost certainly your issue. If the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar and the F1 error is still showing, do not repressurise — skip to Step 6.
Step 2 — Locate the filling loop: Most Ferroli boilers are connected to a filling loop — a short braided metal or plastic hose with one or two valves, usually found underneath the boiler. Some newer Ferroli models (such as the BlueHelix Tech) have an internal filling key or built-in filling device. Check your boiler manual if you’re unsure where yours is.
Step 3 — Repressurise the system: Slowly open the filling loop valve(s) — usually by turning a lever or a screw — and watch the pressure gauge rise. You’re aiming for around 1.2 to 1.5 bar. Do this slowly; it’s very easy to overshoot. Once the gauge reads 1.2–1.5 bar, close the valve(s) firmly. Do not exceed 2 bar.
Step 4 — Reset the boiler: Once the system is back up to the correct pressure, press and hold the reset button on your Ferroli boiler (consult your manual if you can’t locate it — on many Ferroli models it’s a button labelled ‘Reset’ or a flame symbol). Hold for 3–5 seconds and release. The boiler should attempt to fire up.

Step 7 — Check whether you recently bled your radiators: If you bled radiators in the days before the F1 error appeared, this is almost certainly the cause. Simply repressurise as described in Steps 2–4 and monitor. No further action is likely needed unless the pressure continues to drop.
Step 8 — Do not attempt any further DIY: If you cannot find an obvious cause, if the pressure drops repeatedly after topping up, if you see any signs of a leak at the boiler itself, or if you are at all unsure — stop here. This is a gas appliance and any internal work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not attempt to open the boiler casing, adjust the PRV, or touch any gas or internal water components yourself.
