Washing Machine
E13
The E13 error code on a Hotpoint washing machine indicates a water leakage fault — the machine has detected water where it shouldn’t be, typically in the base tray, and has stopped to prevent flooding. It’s a safety feature, but it needs prompt attention.
What does this error mean?
Hotpoint washing machines have a flood protection system with a float switch in the drip tray at the base of the machine. When water leaks internally and collects in this tray, the float rises and triggers the E13 code, cutting the programme. The machine is telling you there’s an active or recent leak somewhere in the system — it won’t run again until the tray is empty and the source of the leak is resolved.

🔍 Likely causes
🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Switch off and unplug the machine immediately — never investigate a water fault with power on.
Carefully tilt the machine backwards (prop it at roughly 45°) to drain water from the base tray into towels or a bowl. Once empty, stand the machine back upright and leave for 20–30 minutes to allow residual moisture to evaporate.
Inspect the door seal all the way around for cracks, tears, mould damage, or foreign objects (coins, grips) that are breaking the seal. Run your finger along the inner lip — any split will be obvious.
Pull out the detergent drawer fully and check the housing inside for cracks or blockages causing water to overflow into the cabinet rather than into the drum.
Check the fill hose at the back and any visible internal hoses for splits, kinks, or loose jubilee clips. Tighten or replace as needed — replacement hoses cost £5–£15 from appliance parts suppliers.
Once dry and inspected, plug back in and run a short 30°C cycle while watching for any visible drips. If E13 returns or you find no obvious external cause, stop and call an engineer — the leak is likely internal.
📞 When to call a professional
If you’ve drained the tray and the error returns within one cycle, or you cannot identify a visible leak source, call a Hotpoint-approved or independent appliance engineer. Tell them you have an E13 fault, that the base tray float switch is triggering, and describe any unusual noises (rumbling or grinding can indicate bearing failure, which is a more complex repair).
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A door seal replacement typically costs £80–£130 fitted; internal hose or valve repairs sit in the £90–£160 range. If your machine is under 5 years old and the repair is under £150, it’s almost always worth fixing. Over 8 years old with a drum or bearing fault, replacement makes more financial sense — a reliable mid-range Hotpoint washing machine costs £350–£500 new.
