Air Fryer
E4
The E4 error code on a Breville air fryer indicates an overheating fault — the unit has detected that internal temperatures have exceeded safe operating limits and has shut itself down to prevent damage or fire. It’s a safety cutout, not a catastrophic failure, and in most cases you can resolve it yourself.
What does this error mean?
Breville air fryers use a thermal sensor to continuously monitor the temperature inside the cooking chamber and around the heating element. When that sensor reads a temperature above the appliance’s safe threshold, it triggers the E4 code and cuts power to the heater. This is a protective mechanism — the fryer is telling you something caused it to run too hot, whether that’s blocked airflow, a positioning issue, or a faulty component.
Est. repair cost
£40–£70 professional repair (fan or sensor replacement); thermal fuse DIY part £5–£15 (only if you are competent with electronics — otherwise do not attempt)
🔍 Likely causes
🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Switch the air fryer off at the wall and unplug it immediately. Leave it to cool for at least 30 minutes before touching it or attempting anything else.
Check and clear the vents — inspect the top, rear, and underside of the unit for grease deposits or food debris. Wipe vents clean with a dry cloth or soft brush. Do not use water near the vents.
Reposition the appliance — move it to an open countertop with at least 15 cm of clear space on all sides and above. Never operate it under overhead cupboards.
Clean the basket and drawer — remove, wash, and thoroughly dry the basket and inner drawer. Built-up grease on the cooking surfaces can cause localised hot spots that trigger the sensor.
Reduce the load — if you were cooking a large batch, try again with a smaller quantity and avoid stacking food above the fill line marked inside the basket.
Plug back in and run a short, low-temperature test cook (around 160°C for 5 minutes with nothing in the basket). If E4 returns immediately or the fan sounds laboured or absent, stop using the appliance and contact Breville support or a repair technician.
📞 When to call a professional
If the E4 code returns after you’ve cleaned the vents, repositioned the fryer, and reduced the load, the fault is likely internal — either a failed circulation fan, a blown thermal fuse, or a defective temperature sensor. Do not attempt to open the casing yourself, as capacitors inside can hold a charge even when unplugged. Contact Breville’s UK customer support (particularly if the appliance is under its two-year warranty) or take it to a reputable small appliance repair shop — tell them the unit is showing an E4 overheating error and that the fan may have failed.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional repair — typically a fan motor or thermal fuse replacement — will cost around £40–£70 at a small appliance repair shop, which is reasonable if the fryer is less than two years old or a higher-end Breville model (Smart Oven Air range). Budget Breville air fryers retailing under £60 are generally not worth repairing professionally; put that money toward a replacement instead. If your model is over three years old and out of warranty, replacement is usually the more cost-effective choice given current UK appliance prices.
