Dishwasher
E14
The E14 error code on a Miele dishwasher indicates a fault with the water intake flow sensor — specifically, that the appliance cannot correctly measure how much water is entering the machine. It’s a moderately serious fault that will stop your dishwasher from completing a cycle, but in many cases it’s fixable without calling an engineer.
What does this error mean?
Miele dishwashers use a flow meter (sometimes called a water meter or turbine sensor) fitted to the water inlet to measure exactly how much water enters the machine during each fill phase. When the E14 code appears, the control board is not receiving a valid signal from this sensor — either no signal at all, or a reading that falls outside expected parameters. This prevents the machine from filling correctly and triggers a protective shutdown to avoid flooding or damage.

🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Reset the machine first: switch the dishwasher off at the mains, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on and run a short cycle. A one-off E14 after a power fluctuation can clear itself.
Check the inlet hose: pull the dishwasher out slightly and inspect the hose running from the wall valve to the machine. Straighten any kinks and ensure the isolation valve is fully open.
Clean the inlet filter: turn off the water supply, unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine (have a cloth ready), and remove the small mesh filter from the inlet port. Rinse it under the tap to clear limescale or grit, then refit securely.
Check your water pressure: run a cold tap nearest the dishwasher — if the flow seems unusually weak, contact your water supplier or a plumber. Low mains pressure will repeatedly trigger E14.
Inspect and clean the flow meter: with the water supply off and the machine unplugged, locate the flow meter on the inlet assembly (consult your model’s service diagram or the Miele website). Remove it, rinse it gently under running water to free any debris jamming the turbine, and check the impeller spins freely before refitting.
If none of the above resolves the fault, the flow meter sensor itself is likely failed — this requires replacing the part. Miele flow meters typically cost £25–£60 for the part. If you are comfortable with basic appliance repairs, this is a DIY-feasible job; otherwise, call an engineer.
📞 When to call a professional
If cleaning the inlet filter and resetting the machine doesn’t clear the E14 code, and you’re not confident disassembling the inlet assembly, call a Miele-approved or reputable local appliance engineer. Tell them: ‘My Miele dishwasher is showing error code E14 — I suspect a flow meter fault.’ If the machine is still under Miele’s warranty (typically 2 years standard, up to 10 years on some parts), contact Miele UK directly on 0330 160 6600 before attempting any DIY repair, as self-repair may void the warranty.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional repair for an E14 fault — typically flow meter replacement plus labour — will cost £80–£160 in the UK. Miele dishwashers are premium, long-life appliances; if yours is under 8–10 years old and otherwise working well, repair is almost always the right call. If the machine is over 12 years old and has had previous faults, weigh the repair cost against a new mid-range Miele (£600–£900) and consider replacement.
