Washing Machine
E15
The E15 error code on a Grundig washing machine indicates a water leakage or overflow fault detected by the base tray sensor — it’s a safety shutdown you shouldn’t ignore, but it’s often fixable without a call-out.
What does this error mean?
Grundig washing machines have a polystyrene float sensor in the base drip tray. When water leaks into the tray and lifts that float, the machine cuts out and displays E15 to prevent further flooding. The machine won’t run again until the tray is dry and the float has dropped back to its resting position.

🔍 Likely causes
🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Unplug the machine from the mains immediately — never work on it with power connected.
Tilt the machine carefully backwards (10–15 degrees) to drain any standing water out of the base tray, then leave it upright to air dry for at least 2–3 hours before plugging back in.
Inspect the door seal (rubber bellows) for visible cracks, holes, or debris build-up. Clean thoroughly with a damp cloth; if damaged, a replacement seal costs £15–£35 and can be swapped with basic tools.
Pull out the detergent drawer fully and check for blockages or scale build-up. Clean the drawer and its housing with warm water — a blocked drawer can cause water to overflow into the base.
Once dry, plug back in and run a short cycle while watching underneath the machine for any active drips. Use a torch to check around hose connections at the back.
If the error returns immediately or you spot an internal hose leaking, stop and call a qualified appliance engineer — do not open the machine’s main casing to access internal components yourself.
📞 When to call a professional
Call an appliance engineer if the E15 error returns after the tray has fully dried out, if you can see water actively dripping from an internal hose or the pump, or if you cannot identify the source of the leak. When booking, tell the engineer: ‘Grundig washing machine showing E15 — base tray leak detection fault, tray has been drained but error persists.’
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional call-out to diagnose and fix an E15 leak fault typically costs £80–£150 depending on the part needed. If your Grundig machine is under 5 years old, repair is almost always worth it. Over 8 years old with a major component failure (pump, inlet valve, drum bearing), replacement with a new machine at £350–£600 is likely the more economical choice.
