Tumble Dryer
F05
The F05 error code on a Miele tumble dryer indicates a fault with the moisture sensor system, meaning the dryer cannot accurately detect when your laundry is dry. It’s a common fault that’s often DIY-fixable, but ignoring it will lead to over-drying, higher energy bills, or the machine stopping mid-cycle.
What does this error mean?
Miele tumble dryers use two metal sensor bars inside the drum to measure the electrical conductivity of your laundry — wet clothes conduct electricity, dry clothes don’t. The F05 code means the control board is receiving an abnormal or no signal from these moisture sensor bars. This is usually because the bars are coated with limescale or fabric softener residue rather than because the sensor itself has failed.

🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Unplug the dryer from the mains before doing anything inside the drum — safety first.
Locate the two silver metal sensor bars inside the front of the drum (they look like narrow strips running horizontally). Dampen a cloth with white vinegar or a small amount of rubbing alcohol and firmly wipe both bars to remove limescale and fabric softener residue. Dry them off with a clean cloth.
Clear the lint filter thoroughly — remove it, rinse it under warm water if it’s clogged with residue, let it dry completely, and refit it.
Check the heat exchanger (on condenser models): open the flap at the bottom of the machine, remove the heat exchanger, and rinse it under running water. A blocked heat exchanger can cause sensor misreadings. Refit it once dry.
Plug the dryer back in, run a short timed drying programme (not an automatic sensor programme), and see if the F05 code clears. If it does, run a normal load to confirm the sensor is working.
If the code persists after cleaning, the sensor bars or their wiring may need replacing. This is a straightforward part swap, but requires removing the front panel — if you’re not confident with appliance repairs, call a technician at this point.
📞 When to call a professional
If the F05 error returns immediately after thoroughly cleaning the sensor bars, the sensor itself has likely failed or there is a wiring fault between the sensor and control board. Call a Miele-approved or reputable local appliance engineer and tell them you have an F05 code on a Miele tumble dryer, that you’ve cleaned the moisture sensor bars, and the fault persists — this gives them a clear starting point and may reduce diagnostic time.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional repair for an F05 fault — typically a sensor bar replacement and service — costs £80–£150 in the UK including parts and labour. Miele tumble dryers are built to last 10–15 years, so if your machine is under 8 years old, repair is almost always the better value. If it’s over 10 years old and the repair quote exceeds £150, a replacement becomes worth considering — budget £500–£900 for a comparable Miele condenser or heat pump dryer.
