Washing Machine
E34
The E34 error code on an Electrolux washing machine indicates that the appliance has detected water in the base tray (the anti-flood drip tray beneath the drum), triggering the built-in Aqua Control safety system. It’s a serious warning that shouldn’t be ignored — your machine will lock out until the fault is resolved.
What does this error mean?
Electrolux washing machines have a polystyrene float switch sitting in a plastic tray at the bottom of the machine. When water leaks internally and pools in this tray, the float rises and triggers the E34 code, cutting power to the drum and pump as a flood-prevention measure. The machine is working exactly as designed — the error means water has escaped from where it should be and needs to be found and fixed.

🔍 Likely causes
🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Step 1 — Unplug the machine immediately. Never work on it with power connected. Turn off the water supply tap behind the machine.
Step 2 — Tilt the machine carefully backwards at roughly 45 degrees (get someone to help — machines are heavy). This drains the base tray by design. Leave it tilted for 5–10 minutes until fully drained, then stand it upright.
Step 3 — Remove the front kick panel (usually two screws or press-clips at the bottom). Use a torch to inspect the base tray and the surrounding hoses and connections for visible cracks, splits, or wet patches.
Step 4 — Check the door seal visually and by running your fingers around the full circumference. Look for splits, tears, or grit damage. A damaged door seal is the most common cause and costs £15–£35 for the part — it’s a DIY-friendly replacement with basic tools and a YouTube guide for your specific model.
Step 5 — Inspect the detergent drawer and its housing for cracks or blockages. Remove the drawer fully, clean the housing with a damp cloth, and check the plastic isn’t split. A blocked or cracked drawer can redirect water into the cabinet.
Step 6 — Once you’ve identified and fixed the leak source, run an empty short cycle at 40°C and monitor closely. If E34 returns or you cannot find the leak source, stop and call an engineer — do not keep running the machine.
📞 When to call a professional
If you’ve drained the base tray and the E34 code returns within one wash cycle, or if you cannot find an obvious leak source like the door seal or a visible hose, call a qualified appliance engineer. Tell them: ‘My Electrolux washing machine is showing error code E34, the Aqua Control float has been triggered, and I cannot locate the leak source.’ Internal hose replacements and pressure switch faults require partial disassembly and are not suitable for DIY.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional call-out and repair for an E34 fault typically costs £80–£150 depending on the part required and your location in the UK. If your machine is under 5 years old, repair is almost always worth it. If it’s 8 years or older and requires a pump or inlet valve replacement on top of the call-out fee, compare this against a new mid-range Electrolux washing machine at £350–£550 — replacement may make better financial sense.
