Dishwasher
E4
The E4 error code on a Miele dishwasher indicates a water overflow or flood protection fault — the machine has detected more water than expected in the base tray and has stopped as a safety measure. It’s a serious fault that needs prompt attention to prevent water damage to your kitchen floor and cabinetry.
What does this error mean?
Miele dishwashers have a float switch and a drip tray built into the base of the appliance. When water collects in this tray — whether from an internal leak or a drainage fault — the float rises, triggers the flood protection sensor, and the machine displays E4 and halts operation. The dishwasher will also typically activate its drain pump continuously to try to clear the water. This is a safety feature, not a sensor error — there is almost certainly real water in the base.
Est. repair cost
DIY fix (drain hose, door seal, filter clean): £0–£35 in parts. Professional repair: £80–£160 all-in.
🔍 Likely causes
🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Switch off and unplug the dishwasher immediately. Do not run another cycle — this will only add more water to the base.
Carefully tilt the dishwasher forward at roughly 45 degrees (have a towel ready) to drain the water from the base tray through the front. Keep it tilted for 60–90 seconds, then stand it back upright and leave it for 30 minutes to allow the float switch to drop back down.
Check and clean the filter assembly at the bottom of the wash tub — remove it, rinse under the tap, and check for debris that could be causing drainage problems.
Inspect the drain hose at the back of the machine. Ensure it isn’t kinked, crushed behind the unit, or blocked. Disconnect it carefully at the sink/waste end and check for blockages.
Examine the door seal all the way around for cracks, tears, or debris stopping it from closing flush. Clean it with a damp cloth and press it back into its channel if it has partially come loose.
Plug the machine back in and run a short cycle while watching closely for any visible leaks around the door, under the machine, or at hose connections. If the E4 returns, stop and call an engineer — the fault is internal.
📞 When to call a professional
If the E4 error returns after you have drained the base tray and completed the checks above, the leak source is likely internal — a failed circulation pump seal, a cracked sump, or a faulty inlet valve — and will require a qualified appliance engineer to diagnose and repair safely. When you call, tell them: ‘My Miele dishwasher is showing an E4 flood protection error. I’ve drained the base tray and checked the filter and drain hose, but the fault has returned.’ This saves diagnostic time and money.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional repair for an E4 fault — typically replacing a pump seal, inlet valve, or door seal — costs £80–£160 in the UK including parts and labour. Miele appliances are built to last 15–20 years, so if your machine is under 10 years old, repair is almost always the right call. If it’s over 12 years old and needs a major component like a new pump or sump, compare the repair quote against a new mid-range Miele (from around £700) before committing.
