The E52 error code on an AEG washing machine points to a fault with the motor’s tachogenerator — the sensor that monitors motor speed. It’s a moderately serious fault that will stop your machine mid-cycle, but it’s not always an expensive fix.
What does this error mean?
The E52 code means the washing machine’s control board is not receiving a valid speed signal from the tachogenerator, a small component attached to the motor that tells the machine how fast the drum is spinning. Without this signal, the machine cannot safely control the wash or spin cycle, so it cuts out to protect itself. In some cases the motor itself is at fault, but the tachogenerator is the first suspect.

Power reset: Switch the machine off at the socket, wait 5 minutes, then switch back on and restart the cycle. A transient fault or power surge can trigger E52 spuriously, and a full power reset often clears it.
Check the load: Overloading can strain the motor and trigger speed faults. Remove half the load, redistribute the remaining items evenly, and try again.
Inspect the wiring harness: With the machine unplugged, pull the machine out and remove the back panel (held by a few screws). Locate the motor and trace the two wires running from the tachogenerator (a small disc on the back of the motor). Check both connectors are fully seated and look for any obvious burn marks or corrosion. Reseat any loose connectors firmly.
Check carbon brush condition: While the back panel is off and the machine is unplugged, locate the carbon brushes on either side of the motor. They should be at least 1cm long. If they are worn down to a stub or broken, replace them — carbon brushes for AEG motors are widely available online for £10–£20 and are a straightforward DIY swap.
Test or replace the tachogenerator: The tacho is a small coil sensor clipped to the rear of the motor. A replacement part typically costs £8–£20. Unclip the old sensor, note the wiring orientation, fit the new one, reconnect, and refit the panel before testing.
