What does this error mean?
The E1 error code on LG washing machines (sometimes displayed as ‘IE’ on models with an LCD display, which can look like ‘E1’ at a glance) is a water inlet error. It means the machine has tried to fill with water but has either received no water at all, or has not reached the minimum required water level within the expected time — usually around 4 minutes. The appliance’s pressure sensor (also called a water level sensor or pressure switch) monitors how much water is in the drum. If it doesn’t detect a sufficient water level within the fill cycle timeout, it stops the programme and throws the E1 or IE fault. This is a safety mechanism to prevent the machine running dry and burning out the heater element or drum motor. Step 1 — Power cycle the machine: Switch the washing machine off at the plug, wait 60 seconds, then switch it back on and try a new programme. A temporary electronic glitch can occasionally trigger a false E1 error, and a full reset clears it. No tools needed.
Step 2 — Check the water supply tap is fully open: Pull the machine slightly away from the wall and locate the cold water inlet tap (usually a blue-handled valve on the wall or under the worktop). Ensure it is turned fully anticlockwise (open). If it was partially closed, open it fully, restart the machine, and see if the error clears.
Step 3 — Inspect the inlet hose for kinks: While the machine is pulled out, visually inspect the cold water fill hose running from the tap to the back of the machine. Straighten out any sharp bends or kinks. Ensure the hose is not pinched between the machine and the wall. Push the machine back carefully to avoid re-kinking it.
Step 4 — Clean the inlet filter mesh: Turn off the water supply tap fully. Place a towel and a shallow bowl under the inlet hose connection at the back of the machine. Unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine by hand (it should not require tools — it’s hand-tight). Inside the connection port on the machine you will see a small mesh filter screen. Step 6 — Check the pressure sensor hose: Carefully pull the machine fully out and remove the rear access panel if your LG model allows it (some LG top-loaders and older front-loaders have a removable back panel secured by Phillips-head screws). Locate the clear plastic air tube that runs from the bottom of the drum up to the pressure switch on the side of the cabinet. Check it for cracks, splits, or blockages.
