Dishwasher
E12
The E12 error code on a Siemens dishwasher indicates a limescale or heating element fault — specifically that the appliance has detected scale build-up affecting its heating system. It’s a moderately serious fault that will stop your dishwasher completing cycles, but in most cases it’s fully fixable at home.
What does this error mean?
E12 signals that the dishwasher’s control board has detected abnormal resistance in the heating circuit, almost always caused by limescale coating the heating element or flow heater. In hard water areas (most of England, particularly the South East), calcium deposits build up over time and insulate the heater, causing it to overheat or fail to reach the correct temperature. The machine throws E12 as a protective measure to prevent component damage.

🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Reset the machine: Switch the dishwasher off at the mains, wait 60 seconds, then power it back on. Run a short cycle to see if E12 clears — occasional sensor glitches can trigger a false E12.
Check and refill the salt compartment: Open the base of the dishwasher door, locate the round salt cap, and top up with dishwasher salt (not table salt). Reset the salt indicator if prompted in the settings menu.
Refill rinse aid: Open the rinse aid dispenser on the inside of the door and fill to the max line. Set dispenser level to 4–5 if you’re in a hard water area.
Clean the filters: Remove the cylindrical filter and flat mesh filter from the dishwasher floor, rinse under hot running water, and scrub with a soft brush. Refit securely — a loose filter restricts flow and stresses the heater.
Run a descaling cycle: Add a proprietary dishwasher descaler (such as Finish Dishwasher Cleaner or Durgol) directly to the base of an empty dishwasher and run the hottest cycle available (typically 70°C). Repeat if the error persists after the cycle completes.
If E12 returns after descaling, do not attempt to replace the heating element or NTC sensor yourself — these require draining the machine and accessing internal wiring. Stop here and call an engineer.
📞 When to call a professional
If E12 persists after resetting, refilling salt and rinse aid, cleaning filters, and running a full descaling cycle, the heating element or NTC temperature sensor has likely failed and needs professional replacement. Call a Siemens-approved or reputable local appliance engineer and tell them: ‘My Siemens dishwasher is showing error code E12 and it hasn’t cleared after descaling and filter cleaning.’ This gives them enough information to arrive with the correct parts.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional repair — typically replacing the heating element or NTC sensor — costs £80–£160 including labour in the UK. If your dishwasher is under 5 years old, repair is almost always worth it. If it’s over 8 years old and the heating element has failed (often a sign of years of scale damage), weigh repair cost against a new mid-range Siemens dishwasher at £450–£700 — replacement may be more economical long-term.
