Tumble Dryer
F05
The F05 error code on a Siemens tumble dryer signals a problem with the moisture sensor or the drainage/condensation system — it’s one of the more common faults but can usually be resolved without calling an engineer.
What does this error mean?
The F05 code tells you the dryer’s control board has detected a fault in the moisture-sensing circuit, which is responsible for determining how damp your laundry is during the cycle. On condenser and heat pump models, it can also flag that the condensate system isn’t draining correctly, meaning the drum environment isn’t behaving as the machine expects. In both cases, the dryer cuts the cycle short to prevent damage to your clothes or the appliance.

£80–£150 professional repair; £10–£30 DIY (moisture sensor or NTC sensor part only)
🔍 Likely causes
🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Reset the dryer: switch off at the wall, wait 60 seconds, then power back on and restart the cycle. A one-off software glitch can trigger F05 and a reset clears it.
Clean the moisture sensor bars: open the drum and locate the two small metal strips near the door opening (usually at the front, lower edge). Wipe them firmly with a cloth dampened in white vinegar or rubbing alcohol to remove residue, then dry thoroughly.
Empty and reseat the water drawer: pull the drawer out completely, empty it, rinse it, and push it firmly back in until it clicks. A partially seated drawer can trigger drainage faults.
Clean the condenser unit: remove the condenser (usually behind a kick-plate panel at the bottom front of the machine), rinse it under a cold tap until water runs clear, shake off excess water, and refit it securely.
Check and clean the lint filter: a heavily clogged filter restricts airflow and stresses the whole humidity system. Remove, clean under running water, allow to dry, and replace before the next cycle.
Inspect the sensor wiring (visual only): if you’re comfortable removing the back panel, check that the connector to the moisture sensor is firmly pushed in. Do not attempt to repair wiring or test live components — stop here and call a professional if the fault persists.
📞 When to call a professional
If the F05 code returns after completing all the cleaning and reset steps above, the fault is likely an internal wiring issue, a failed NTC sensor, or a faulty PCB — none of which are safe or practical for DIY repair. Call a Siemens-approved or reputable independent appliance engineer and tell them: ‘My Siemens tumble dryer is displaying F05 and it persists after cleaning the moisture sensors, condenser, and water drawer.’ This gives the engineer everything they need to diagnose quickly.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A professional repair — typically sensor replacement or PCB diagnosis — costs £80–£150 including labour. A new mid-range Siemens condenser dryer costs £450–£700, so repair is almost always worth it if your machine is under eight years old and in otherwise good condition. If your dryer is over ten years old and has had previous faults, replacing it is often the more cost-effective long-term choice.
