Dishwasher
F11
The F11 error code on a Whirlpool dishwasher signals a drain pump or drainage fault — water isn’t leaving the machine as it should. It’s a moderately serious fault that will stop your cycle mid-wash, but in many cases it’s something you can fix yourself in under 30 minutes.
What does this error mean?
F11 tells you the dishwasher’s control board has detected that water is not draining away within the expected time window. The machine monitors drain pump activity and water levels; if standing water remains after the drain cycle runs, it throws the F11 code and halts the programme. This protects your kitchen floor from flooding but means nothing will work until the blockage or fault is cleared.

🛠️ Step-by-step fix
Step 1 – Reset the machine: Switch the dishwasher off at the mains for 5 minutes, then power it back on and run a short cycle. A temporary glitch can trigger F11 and a reset clears it instantly.
Step 2 – Clean the filter: Remove the lower basket and unscrew the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub. Rinse it under the tap, scrubbing away any grease or food debris with an old toothbrush, then refit it securely.
Step 3 – Check for standing water: If water is pooled in the bottom of the machine, bail it out with a jug and sponge. Then inspect the filter housing and sump area for any solid debris — glass, food, or a broken piece of crockery can jam the pump.
Step 4 – Inspect the drain hose: Pull the dishwasher out slightly and trace the corrugated drain hose to where it connects at the sink waste or standpipe. Straighten any kinks and check the connection is clear. Disconnect the hose end at the sink and blow through it to confirm it’s not blocked.
Step 5 – Check your sink waste: Run your kitchen tap and watch how quickly the sink drains. A slow sink drain will back-pressure the dishwasher. Clear the sink trap with a plunger or sink unblocker, then retest the dishwasher.
Step 6 – Test the drain pump manually: With the dishwasher unplugged, reach into the sump and carefully feel the pump impeller (the spinning disc). If it won’t rotate freely, something is jamming it — remove the obstruction with pliers. Do NOT attempt to open the pump motor housing or access wiring yourself; at that point, call a professional.
📞 When to call a professional
If you’ve cleared the filter, checked the drain hose and sink, and the F11 code returns after a reset, the drain pump motor has most likely failed and needs replacing — this requires partial disassembly of the machine and is best left to a qualified appliance engineer. Call an engineer and tell them: ‘My Whirlpool dishwasher is showing an F11 error code, I’ve checked the filter and drain hose, and I suspect the drain pump motor has failed.’ This saves diagnostic time and money.
⚖️ Repair or replace?
A drain pump replacement on a Whirlpool dishwasher typically costs £80–£150 including labour at UK market rates. If your dishwasher is under seven years old and otherwise working well, repair is almost always worth it. If it’s over eight to ten years old or has had previous costly repairs, a new mid-range dishwasher (£300–£500) is the smarter long-term investment.
